Students Make the Right Moves at Gateway Chess League Fall Open

Students in every level of the Ladue School District showed off their tactical strategy skills at the Gateway Chess League Fall Open held this past Saturday, Nov. 12. Spoede Elementary won the 3rd grade and under division at this tournament, LMS took home two 2nd place team trophies (8th grade and under and 6th grade and under) and LHWHS took home a 3rd place team trophy.

Elementary:

The Spoede Elementary team of Celina Zhou (3), Cooper Buxner (2), Christopher Huang (3), and Alex Zhang (1) won the 3rd grade and under division.

In the 3rd grade and under individual standings, Celina Zhou (3) came in 1st place and Cooper Buxner (2) finished in 7th place.

Fifth Grade

In the 5th grade and under team, Zachary Barrett (5) came in 9th out of 22 teams.

In the 5th grade and under individual standings, Zachary Barrett (5) came in 4th.

Middle School:

The Ladue Middle School 6th grade and under team of Samuel Loiterstein (6), Max Yang (6), Rory Bland (6), and Gil Weiss (6) also finished in 2nd place.

In the 6th grade and under individual standings, Samuel Loiterstein (6) received 5th place and Max Yang (6) received 7th place.

The Ladue Middle School 8th grade and under team of Benjamin Liu (7), Alex Rybak (7), Arya Bhushan (7), Katie Eisenman (8), Joshua Fundler (7), Daniel Ye (7), and Roshen Chatwal (7) finished in 2nd place.

In the 8th grade and under division individual standings, Benjamin Liu (7) received 4th place, Alex Rybak (7) received 6th place and Arya Bhushan (7) received 8th place.

High School

The LHWHS team of Zachary Millsap (12), Thomas Xiong (11), Jason Pummer (9), and Sophie Kras (9) finished in 3rd place.

In the high school division individual standings, Zachary Millsap (12) was the co-champion, Thomas Xiong (11) finished in 9th place, and Jason Pummer (9) finished in 10th place.
